Handbook of Sports Medicine and Science: The Female Athlete

Resource Description:

This resource focuses on the medical, psychological, and physiological aspects of female athletes. It covers a range of topics, including injury prevention, nutrition, menstrual health, bone health, the female athlete triad, and psychological well-being. The handbook also explores issues specific to female athletes, such as pregnancy, pelvic floor dysfunction, gender-related topics, and mental health risks like anxiety and depression. In addition to addressing general sports medicine, it highlights the challenges encountered by Paralympic athletes and athletes transitioning genders.

The book aims to educate athletes, coaches, parents, and sports organisations on promoting the health of female athletes while optimising performance. Emphasising both scientific research and practical applications, it encourages safe participation in sports through prevention strategies and awareness of the unique health needs of female athletes.

Sport NZ has a Women and Girls Strategy aimed at supporting females in sports, which can be accessed here.
